Environmental Initiatives

The Wyalkatchem Community is very aware of the importance of caring for our environment.

Recycling Centre

This is situated by the Railway line (shed with mural on). Cans, bottles and paper can be brought here at any time for recycling. No plastic is accepted. The Men’s bowling club is responsible for transporting the goods to Perth.

NEWROC

Wyalkatchem belongs to the North Eastern Ward consisting of 7 neighbouring councils and contributes and supports the Natural Management Plan for the region. It works within the policy plans of the region for all environmental issues. Deep drainage and rural roadside vegetation are two such issues

Fire Site

In 1998 Wyalkatchem suffered a bad bush fire. Tree planting and fencing continues to revegetate the site with excellent results

Korrelocking Nature Reserve

The Reserve located 10 kilometres east of Wyalkatchem is an example of joint management with CALM and the Shire. The new entry road, friendly parking bays and interpretive signage enhances the area for visitors.

Individual Initiatives

Local stonemason Michel Boulon has patented the idea of planters made from recycled tyres, used to great effect around the town. An example can be seen in the photo above. Michel also constructed the stone surrounds, while Robert Holdsworth of Extraordinary Iron Works has made attractive plough disc flowers which are scattered around town. Andy Bywater, a local painter and craftsman has used many recycled objects in his efforts for Tidy Towns. These three gentlemen have volunteered their services for Tidy Towns and the community is most grateful.

Endangered Species Garden

Another Tidy Towns initiative, this garden contains rare and endangered species of plants. Signs indicate the names of the plants. The Wyalkatchem Fox glove is unique to the district and is of special interest.

Drum Muster

The Shire has a drum collection and recycling depot where farmers can leave their washed out chemical drums.
