Waste Wise School

Wyalkatchem District High School - A Waste Wise School

Our school has been encouraging environmentally friendly practices over many years. At all levels, students have been part of many great activities that increase their environmental awareness.

Earth Schools

This began with a competition run by the Keep Australia Beautiful Council and is ongoing. It involves the children in recycling, worm farms and water wise ideas.

Waste Wise School

Recently Wyalkatchem decided to become a waste wise school. An audit has been done to measure the amount of waste the school produces. Any waste produced then will be either reduced, reused or recycled. The Year 5 class are already making new products out of waste paper such as paper mats, paper bricks, paper beads, notepads, cards and bookmarks.

Permaculture Garden

High school students have been responsible for designing, planning, creating and maintaining this garden. It has been created from recycled materials and teaches all students involved how to organically grow vegetables, herbs, native trees and more. The students sell produce to the local community and use the money earnt to upgrade their garden.

As you can see the school is very enthusiastic about caring for our school, town and environment
