Shire Events
The Shire of Wyalkatchem in conjunction with the Community is developing a range of events that will showcase the best of what Wylie has to offer. This includes the following:
Go For Two and Five Heritage and Rose Festival
The inaugural Heritage and Rose festival was held on the weekend of 13 and 14 October 2007. This was a small event aimed at putting Wylie’s toe in the water to see if there was scope to have an annual festival. The concept behind the festival is to bring together some key parts of the community including the CBH museum, businesses, the Town Hall, the newly endorsed Memorial Rose Gardens and other infrastructure. Key activities and displays include an art display with paintings, prints, sculptures and drawings for sale, a tractor display, boot scooting, Devonshire teas, scenic training flights with Sky Aviation at the airstrip and a wine and cheese night It is planned for 2008 to plant out the rose gardens that make up the Rose Memorial Gardens to celebrate those who returned from war to Wyalkatchem. This will include inviting back 880 families of those who returned from war to help plant the memorial roses. The event will take place from Friday the 17th October until Sunday 19th October 2008
Those families who want to plant a rose marked by a plaque to honour a family member who took part in a war, please contact Barry Keens, Community Liaison Officer on 9681 1166 or 0429 471 700. Barry can also be contacted for any further information on the Heritage and Rose Festival.
Wylie Classic and Tour of the North East Wheatbelt
Mark McClellan a local teacher recently met with Council and proposed from next year that an annual cycling event be held in Wyalkatchem with the potential to expand to a Tour of the North East Wheatbelt. The date of the inaugural event will be October 4th 2008.
The Cycling Federation supports such events and it is anticipated that at least 600 riders would participate on a bike ride between Wyalkatchem and Koorda. This is a 90 km round trip and falls well within the type of distance that cyclists enjoy.
The Shire and the Wyalkatchem Rotary Club are proud supporters of this proposed event.
Model Train Expo
Wylie is planning a model train expo to be held in the Town Hall sometime during 2008. The concept is for a number of model train layouts to be set up in the Hall for enthusiasts and others to enjoy. This will be held over the course of a weekend.
