"Lest We Forget"

Anzac Day services were strongly supported this year in Wyalkatchem

A simple dawn service was very moving for those who attended, followed by a gunfire breakfast consisting of a sausage sizzle, coffee or tea

At 11am the main service took place commencing with a march by ex service men and women and relatives of returned soldiers, plus fire and ambulance services personnel and cadets.  Nevill Woods, President of the local RSL led the service capably, highlights  of this year being a song "Lest We Forget" by the newly formed Wyalkatchem choir and a live bugler in Dwayne Sobey.  Both added to the atmosphere of the day.  Wreaths were laid by various Wyalkatchem groups and individuals, Nevill gave a short address and played a moving song and the audience joined in with singing two songs.   A march past by the parade in front of Shire President Susan Bruse and Nevill Woods completed the service.

During the service Reverend John Martin dedicated the memorial rose gardens to all service personnel in the district who either did return or did not return from war. 60 roses have been planted in the newly created rock beds in Pioneer Park. This is the first stage in planting around 1500 roses over the next 12 months. The remaining roses will be available to the local families identified by the local RSL who have had members of their families serve in the armed forces at a cost of $100 which includes a plaque. For more details contact Barry Keens at the Shire of Wyalkatchem on (08)9681 1166.

Residents and past residents will be able to select a rose for planting at this year's Heritage and Rose festival which runs from 17th to 19th October. More photos can be seen in the photo gallery to the left hand side of the page.
