Australia Day 2007
After a delicious breakfast capably cooked by Councillors and community members, everybody gathered outside where the Australian flag was raised to the accompaniment of the national anthem led by Reg Cole. Shire President Ed Garner then presented awards. The Christmas light competition was won by June and Charlie Smith (residential) and Wylie News and Gifts (business). Under 25 Young Citizen of the year was Asher Lewis, a teacher at Wyalkatchem District High School who has been active in the community from the time she started at the school. She is an innovative leader in netball and basketball in the town and region and won the 2006 fairest and best for Wyalkatchem netball and was runner up in the Mortlock count. The event of the year went to the "Where's Wylie City to Surf Fun Run" Wyalkatchem had 22 eager participants, who all enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The event was instigated by our local men in blue (khaki?), Senior Constable Phil Matthews ably assisted by Constable Ed Duffy. Constable Duffy accepted the award on behalf of the whole group.
The Senior Award went to Kevin Jones. Kevin has served the community for over 40 years in a volunteer capacity; he was a Shire Councillor for 21 years, is a Life Member and a Serving Brother (the next award after Life Membership) of St John Ambulance, has been and remains an active member of the CBH Museum committee and is also a life member and currently serving as President. Kevin is also a member of Rotary, has been a Lion, served with the SES and the Landcare Committee and P & C - a very deserving recipient.
There was also great excitement when Ruth and Alan Marsland visiting from England, came into the club beaming from ear to ear announcing the birth of their first grandchild Harry Thomas, son to Will and Rachel Nightingale; Ed announced that a presentation would be made to Harry as Wyalkatchem's Australia Day baby. Harry is pictured below.
