Flat Stanley's Been Everywhere Man!

31-07-2007
The Year 1/2 class at Wyalkatchem District High School have sent Flat Stanley all over the world.

The project commenced with the class  making their own Flat Stanleys to send to children all over  the world.  The idea for Flat Stanley was from the book by Jeff Brown about a storybook character who gets squashed by an advertising board; hence Flat Stanley! A launch party was held at the local playground with everyone enjoying a Flat Stanley cake and all flat foods before the Stanleys were sent away.  A few weeks later a rush of emails arrived telling the class what a wonderful time the Flat Stanleys had been having with their new friends. Attached to the emails were an amazing array of photos of all the places the Flat Stanleys had visited.  Some of these included Wasaga Beach Canada,  Derbyshire England , Chicago, Virginia, British Colombia, South Dakota, Illinois and Canberra. They were seen in aeroplanes, gardens, fire engines and  police cars. You can see the photos, some of them very imaginative, by accessing the photo gallery (to the left of this page).  Most of the Flat Stanleys have now arrived home, some of them with souvenirs of their trip for their owners!

The Flat Stanley initiative was taken up by teacher Jo Last and library officer Wendy Chapman and has caused much excitement for the class, their families and all the rest of the school. What a great way to improve literacy and find out about other places in the world. Congratulations!

The people who have had Flat Stanley stay with them have also been delighted with the project, some of their comments follow;
"We are having fun with this. We saw more of Canberra last week than we have in the seven years we have lived there."
"This is a great adventure - I am really enjoying myself"
"Stanley will start packing today..."
