Netball girls win back to back titles

18-09-2008
After winning the Mortlock competition last year Wylie Redbacks looked further afield this year.

Each Thursday the girls travelled to Kellerberrin to play in the local competition and apart from a carload getting lost on the way home from the  first night's competition, they acquitted themselves well, leading to a berth in the grand final.  The girls' loyal supporters followed them and were rewarded by a great win by the team.  To complete the night, Asher Lewis was named fairest and best in the grand final and Tracey Clark was runner up fairest and best for the Association. Well done to the team, Tracey, Asher, Kate Mingay, Hope Sobey, Trinity Ford, Barb Garner, Flic Maitland, Fliss Davies and Carly Stokes.

Having played so well and celebrated, four of the girls then made the trip to Bencubbin the next day to play as a part of Koorda's team in the Central Wheatbelt Grand Final.  Play was close throughout the game with Koorda narrowly defeating Mukinbudin, who had been champions for the previous three years.  Great effort to Tracey, Asher, Hope and Carly who were part of this team. Two medals in two days!  And yet another fairest and best - for the season to Asher.  Congratulations also to the Koorda Football Team (coached by former Wylie boy Jarron Turner!) on winning their first Grand Final in twenty four years!  Koorda was a very happy town on Grand Final night!

The netballers were also able to have three away games in conjunction with the Wylie Footballers and hope to arrange more next season. Unfortunately some members of the team are leaving this year, but the girls hope to continue their winning form.
