Wylie Netball Girls and Football Nippers Win Grand Finals!

19-09-2007
It was an exciting weekend in September. Two wins for Wylie!

The netballers played a very determined Wongan side. Wylie had gone undefeated all year, was this going to be their first loss?  Some very nervous spectators watched the girls as they played a hard fought game. What movement and skills they displayed!  At the beginning of the last quarter Wongan hit the front once when Wylie made a few nervous passes.  However the girls fought back well to win by  five goals. A great effort.  Presentations followed and our own Jo Last was named Mortlock Fairest and Best netballer.  If Jo's game at the grand final was any indication it was well deserved.  Felicity Davies and Rachel Metcalf also received medals for Endeavour. The team  and some of their supporters celebrated well into the night! Congratulations Felicity, Hope, Carly, Tracey, Kate, Jo, Rachel, Trinity and Asher (as pictured) and thanks to major supporter and sometime player Hannah.  You can see more photos of the girls in action by clicking on the photo gallery at the left of the page.

On Sunday morning the Wylie Nippers faced Wongan-Ballidu.  The Wongan-Ballidu side were in front after the first quarter, while Wylie went to the half time huddle just ahead.  Some stirring words by coach Kirwan Naughton which included that he would put sand in their sausage sizzle if they lost, made the boys try very hard but more consistent kicking by Wongan in the third quarter saw them leading at three quarter time by nine points.  At three quarter time every inspirational word uttered by the coach was soaked up and the Nippers hit the field like a side possessed. Without exception, every player lifted their game and a fantastic team effort saw Wylie win 8.13 to Wongan-Ballidu 7.9. It was great to see the great spirit this game was played in by both teams. Parents should be proud of the boys for their sportsmanship.

Footnote: This is the first time in 24 years that the Wylie Nippers have won the shield.  What a great achievement!
