Youth Zone Opens
The first planning of the zone began in early 2005, when the youth expressed a need for a place to hang out. In June 2005 a meeting was held to plan the development of the zone, with the help of the True Blue Dreaming team. From this meeting a list of ideas for the look and activities were made and True Blue Dreaming was successful in securing funding of $5,000 to develop the zone.
In December 2005 a Youth Zone Committee was formed. The members are Joint Presidents Beau Buxton and Jack Pink, Treasurer David Stanik, Secretary Tamika Rowe, Grounds Keeper Mitchell Everett, committee members Barney Boys and Sam Pike and the adult coordinators are Fiona Conley from True Blue Dreaming and Eddy Duffy from the Wyalkatchem Police.
At the beginning of February we had a busy bee which 22 people attended. Everyone worked really hard to clean the inside and maintain the gardens. The Youth Zone committee then completed large pieces of aerosol art to decorate the Zone.
With part of the funding we purchased a pool table, TV, X box, DVD, stereo, board games and sporting equipment.
As a youth zone we invited members of the community to donate any unwanted useable goods, from this calling we received fridges, microwaves, lounges, table and chairs, outdoor setting, BBQ, cupboards, Karaoke DVDs, crockery and books.
Future projects include making a patio and a multi purpose sports area out the back, plus adding to the indoor entertainment.
The youth zone is now open on Wednesdays to the youth from 3pm to 6pm. The target age group is year six onwards. We are planning on opening more days depending on the availability of volunteers.
