Wyalkatchem District High School

Wyalkatchem District High School is located on the northern perimeter of the central wheatbelt town of Wyalkatchem approximately 200 kms from Perth.

The purpose of Wyalkatchem District High School is to provide K - 12 students the opportunity to develop their ability in intellectual, social, cultural, vocational, sporting and recreational areas through a collaborative process. The school encourages the personal values of self-respect, respect for the rights of others and acceptance of responsibilities for one’s actions. This is reinforced in the classroom with a BMIS policy developed around the concept of a safe and positive learning environment.

It has an on-site pre-primary and provision for students from years 1 to 12, including a well equipped school farm situated beyond the northern perimeter of the school. The school is nestled in well maintained native gardens; it has a large, fully reticulated grass oval, play equipment, shaded areas, specialist rooms for art, computing, science, deign and technology, and home economics together with a well stocked library. Administration is computerised and there is access to a publishing system. The physical surrounds are a reflection of the extent of interest of the P & C and the pride of the community in offering a second-to-none educational environment and opportunity for Wyalkatchem students.

Pre-primary children have access to a comprehensive program in a well-equipped Centre with four year olds participating in this program on two days a week. Active parent involvement has assured support in continuing to develop this Centre. The primary section is structured to include classes from years 1 to 7 with classes located predominantly in the western section of the school. Lower secondary students have access to a comprehensive offering of studies in electives, including permaculture. Agriculture, Visual Arts, Auto Workshop and Information Technology as well as English, Mathematics, Science and Society & Environment. All students from K to Year 12 receive specialist Physical Education, whilst LOTE (French) is studied by all the students from Pre Primary to Year 8. Opportunity to proceed to numerous upper school courses, either at Wyalkatchem or the School of Isolated & Distance Education (SIDE), is provided. The school has successfully integrated their own curriculum with SIDE units to provide flexibility and access for post compulsory students, with many students undertaking VET courses and participating locally in Structured Work Based Learning once a week.

Special Programs include Music, Visual Arts, Permaculture, LOTE (French), Students at Educational risk support program and the waste wise program, including recycling and the worm farm. All students have access to the Internet via the computers in the rooms and in the Computer lab.

The School Council

In accordance with Department guidelines, Wyalkatchem has an active School Council that plays a major role in the planning and administration of the school. This decision making body enables all stakeholders (parents, staff, students and community members) to have input into the major decisions that are made and guide the school with new policy development.

The Parents and Citizens Association

The Parents and Citizens Association is affiliated with the Western Australian Council of State School Organisations (WACSSO). Activities are initiated through the various committees including the Grounds and Buildings, Bus, Sports, Agriculture, Canteen and Uniform committees.

School Canteen

There is a school canteen run by the Parents and Citizen's Association, which provides wholesome food at the lowest possible price. The canteen relies on the voluntary help of parents. The canteen is open every Wednesday. Occasionally special days are held to raise funds.
