The Shire Council of Wyalkatchem was founded in 1920 with the establishment of the new Wyalkatchem Road Board. The boundaries were gazetted in May 1920 and the Roads Board came into existence on the 1st July. John Lindsay was elected first Chairman of the Wyalkatchem Road Board at its first meeting on 25th August 1920. There were seven board members including Mr Lindsay. 

In 2008 the number of Councillors is again seven, with the old ward system having been abolished for one ward.

The Shire employs eighteen staff.
