Community Based Projects

Rose Memorial Garden

Members of the community have got together and submitted a proposal to Council for the transformation of Pioneer Park into a Rose Memorial Garden. Council has agreed to the use of Pioneer Park to incorporate the rose memorial gardens.

The concept is to commemorate those who returned from war. This affects some 880 families that have either left or currently reside in Wyalkatchem.

The first of six stages of the rose garden was finished in 2008 with the intention of completing a stage each year.  Rocks for the garden were obtained from local farmers, roses mainly from the garden of Vic and Marlene Garn and the Shire rose garden.  Members of the corrective services Wheatbelt Work Camp have helped with much of the rock work.  74 rose bushes now have plaques commemorating returned personnel with 5 more on order.  For information on how to obtain a plaque phone Barry Keens Community Liaison Officer on 9681 1166.

There will be other rose beds representative of other groups including the Red Cross, the CWA and so on.  A rose bush commemorating members of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia who served in wars has also been dedicated.

 Youth Hangout (Flint Street Playground)

The Changemakers, a group of young students from the local high school have developed a plan to change the local Flint Street Playground to a youth hang out zone that’s also for families.

It is anticipated that the playground will have a new gazebo and BBQ area along with a basketball half court and ring and soccer goals and some fitness equipment. The students have identified their own funding sources and the Shire will contribute $5,000 from its Community Safety Plan initiative.

The project manager for this project is Kate Mingay.

Rose Arbour

A rose arbour was completed at the Cemetery on Sunday 7 October 2007. The arbour was built by the local Business Community and students from Curtin University with support from the Shire.

The rose arbour is located in front of the niche wall and helps define the set down area inside the main entrance to the Cemetery

The project manager for this project was David Holdsworth.
