Future Projects with Neighbouring Shires

The Shire is very excited by and committed to the development of the:

Wheatbelt Motorplex

The Wheatbelt Motorplex will be located 5kms east of Dowerin on the Goomalling Merredin Road.  The Shire is a stakeholder in this project and the potential spin offs include the development of accommodation to meet the needs of visitors to the Motorplex, additional service industries starting and further use of the Shire’s all weather airstrip.

The Shire of Dowerin in conjunction with Dowerin Events Management has applied for substantial funding from the Federal Government and the Wheatbelt Development Commission to assist with development of this project.

Additional information regarding the Motorplex can be found on the Dowerin Field Days website.

Wendy Newman can be contacted at Dowerin Field Days Events Management regarding this exciting development.

Steam Train Corridor

The Shire of Dowerin is the lead on this tourism initiative to run steam trains between the towns of Wyalkatchem, Dowerin and Goomalling.  The steam trains will run during the winter months with the possibility of diesel trains running during the summer.

The trains and carriages will come from the Steam Train Historical Society based at Bassendean and will be housed at the CBH Bin in Minnivale.  A lease has been secured from CBH to use the Minnivale bin and the Shire of Dowerin is now in the process of securing accreditation from the Office of Rail Safety so that it can run the steam trains as required.  Wyalkatchem will need to upgrade its train station to cater for the tourists using the steam trains.

Other stakeholders include Westnet Rail who has responsibility for the Wyalkatchem rail line and AGR which has responsibility for licensing the running of rail stock.

The Shire of Wyalkatchem’s Development Officer is the project manager for this project and can be contacted on 9681 1166 or via comdo@wyalkatchem.wa.gov.au.
