Prison Work Camp

The Shire of Wyalkatchem has applied to the Minister for Corrective Services for the establishment of the Wheatbelt Prison Work Camp. This will be a 24/7 facility with the purpose of housing low risk prisoners that will undertake community based projects both within Wyalkatchem and surrounding districts.

To date the prisoners have helped the Wyalkatchem Community with a number of projects including:

· Tidying and maintenance of various properties and landscapes around town including works at the High School;

· Restoration of plant and equipment at the CBH Museum;

· Restoration of the Rail Barracks;

· Painting of a number of buildings including the Recreation Centre, Lady Novar and Town Hall;

· Works at the RSL Hall; and

· Implementation of the gardens and upgrade of the gazebos at Pioneer Park.

The implementation of the work camp will be in two stages. The first stage is prisoners located at the Rail Barracks while they undertake community works and build the new prison work camp. Stage Two will see the prisoners move in to the new work camp.

The Chief Executive Officer is the project manager for this project and can be contacted on 9681 1166 or via email on ceo@wyalkatchem.wa.gov.au.
