Leading Hand / Plant Operator

The Shire of Wyalkatchem is seeking a motivated, experienced and versatile leading hand to join our road construction and maintenance team.

This is a key operational role offering the opportunity to lead a small crew while contributing directly to the construction and maintenance of the Shire’s road network and community infrastructure.

About the Role

Reporting to the Manager of Works, this position is responsible for:

  • Leading and supervising a small road crew
  • Delivering road construction and maintenance works to a high standard
  • Operating and maintaining a range of heavy plant, including graders and other key machinery
  • Supporting the delivery of the Shire’s annual works program
  • Promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring compliance with WHS requirements

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys both leading from the front and working on the tools.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Proven experience operating heavy plant, particularly graders
  • Experience in road construction and maintenance
  • Ability to lead and supervise a small team and support workforce development
  • Strong understanding of work health and safety practices
  • Current HR or HC Driver’s Licence (MC desirable)
  • Commitment to quality workmanship, safety, and teamwork

Desirable:

  • Traffic management accreditation
  • Local government works experience
  • Mechanical or fabrication skills
